Having been absorbed into Yugoslavia at the end of World War I, Montenegro opted for independence from Serbia in 2006, and applied to join the European Union in 2008. Montenegro means 'Black Mountain', and the country borders Croatia, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and Kosovo. It has an beautiful coastline on the Adriatic, high mountain ranges, and the Tara River canyon, which is the deepest and longest in Europe. The capital city is Podgorica.
